after a twisted, introduction full of warped vocals and shifting percussion, villain builds into a track designed to kill the rave. dropping into a wall of contorted, metallic bass and vicious drums, minor rain switches things up throughout, maintaining interest - as well as that infectious groove. on the flipside, main core shifts gears with a pulsing, submerged bass driving things forward. combining elements of tribal beats, programmed drums and a stuttering rhythm, main core is a great example of future funk musics ability to put out groundbreaking, forward-thinking music.

we have reached number 10. time to celebrate with a remix edition of the deep88 & melchior sultana project. awaiting the album release (later 2014) we asked 2 of our heroes if they would like to make a remix for us. with a lot a lot (and a lot) of happiness we announce the nightwave remix by ben >cozmo d< cenac, formerly known as dream 2 science (and sha-lor and newcleus and the cellar boyz), that made us a wonderful space trip with his dreamy synths and stylish drums. the other remix is >yo house< treated by the excellent australian producer andras fox, that converts the song into a super classy deep house one with a lot of hiss and love. the man behind > running late> really made some magic over the melody of yo house, as usual with the aim of analogue warm-tape-feel and his crazy skills.

so far in its fledgling career, the ultra knites label has been populated by collaborations of the same name from the two founders sem marini and mike sharon. this third release sees the pair showcase their talents as solo artists with the first in a series of knite grooves releases, with sharon calling shotgun and manning proceedings on the a side. with a lilting female vocal hook, soft pads and jazzy rhodes touches, -people- is a classicist take on ny house that features some weighty kick drums, whilst -field of dreams- opts for a approach that s more indebted to the likes of mr fingers. marini delivers a peak time bumper in the shape of -voltage- which contrasts nicely with the deep rolling business of final track -music takes me-.

brill 80s inspired disco monster summer anthem

maeve label honcho the drifter and co-emperor of the permanent vacation kingdom, benjamin fröhlich, team up for some rascal business. always quick to pull the sling shot out of the back pocket and hit you right between the eyes, the original version of -waterville- is full of hazy melodies, washed out bells and quirky arpeggios backed up with concrete drums for some extended dancefloor meditation. while the high tide mix wraps things up a bit with some more prominent drums and a little extra spice on the bassline. mysterious uk producer a sagittariun sculptures out of the original a breakbeat house track, that sounds like a hidden treasure from this short but influential period.

nelistening back, ‘interlude’ will feel like the perfect opening to ‘skylax’. a jazzy encore crawls in, morphing into a skippy hip-hop instrumental with jason’s signature flourishes all over it. aptly named as it is, this is the breathing space between whatever came before in your day, and the eleven deep house gems that are to follow. speaking of, ‘the love’ will have you gripped from the first bar. it glides the listener in, then subtly drops that signature, tightly-tuned bassline of jason’s and continues onto soulful vocals from there. ‘old dayz’ touches on a bit of a nostalgic note. the spoken vox cuts harken back to 90s hip-hop joints, playing over a looped latin sample-led beat. from there, ‘rawkicks 2’ shows jason’s rough and ready sampling style in action. a seemingly simple track, but one which has that special something which guarantees to keep people on the floor moving for its duration. ‘cut b’ contrasts this nicely, being a much cleaner production with tight drum programming and synth work. that said, it still has the classic jg atmosphere we love. closing out the first half of the album, ‘definition’ slows the pace ever so slightly, with its eternal pad structure that builds up the track’s momentum into something very mellow and deep.bringing in the second half of ‘skylax’, ‘john blue’ takes things back a notch further. a deeper tune, yet one that shows off an uncharacteristically punchy bass hit from jason. ‘last night’ is a track more reminiscent of jason’s first lost cuts ep on wax classic, sounding as if it had been freshly taken off an old tape with its sample-led beat and background hiss. the last four tracks of the album see a return to the ‘mastercuts’ and ‘lovedits’ series which fans will recognize from the ‘lost cuts’ records, with ‘lovedits 7’ and ‘mastercut 5’ respectively. the former is a laid back female vocal edit with the entire suite of signature jg touches while the latter is a garage house hit more crafted for the club. ‘bb’ brings the album to a close, twisting a disco/funksample over a pallet of drums and effects for the near six-minute duration of the track.all in all, this is the perfect follow up to jason’s debut album ‘313.4.ever’, with tracks for both the club and home listening. if you happened to miss the first album back in 2012, don’t forget that now you have the chance to grab it in a special double pack with ‘skylax’ on cd!so, needless to say, this timeless record is a must purchase for all collectors and djs out there

the debut release for atrophic society, home to label founder vohkinne, is the culmination of years of experimentation with different ideas and aliases. slithering and raking across heavy groundswells, centering around a whisper and a groan, chanting through the thud of drums and ritualistic rhythms, battery introduces us to vohkinnes vision. different from its origin, breeding an atmosphere of deliberate anxiety without fear or compromise, the veteran ben sims crafts a clenched fist,unrelenting in purpose. dark and urgent, both interpretations ring clear through the fog.

welcoming trikk to truesoul, he brings the quality we have come to expect from both label and artist. his ep starts with deeper point, a track that encompasses heavy techno sounds to create a monster of a track. straight circles (beat mix) repeats and detunes a vocal to engrain it into the memory before prominent highs keep this track moving. the final track bliss drive is different to the rest of the ep and has more of a garage feel to it the funky drums, earth shattering bass line and digital bleeps will knock you sideways!

russian producer sanys has impressed with a series of raw techno records on his downfall theory label - and his latest release further showcases his talents. dominance starts with atmospheric synth washes before a granular bass and relentless percussion propel it forward. like previous sanys releases however, this is not straightforward linear techno and a rumbling vocal and insistent drums will keep the listener engaged. my concern sees sanys opt for a different approach, with a pulsing bass and a crystalline synth line going up and down the scales, intertwined with a vocal snippet, while told you so features another stylistic shift. on this occasion, it s back to the darker sound that was audible on some of the earlier downfall theory releases. tight, snappy drums and robust, insistent claps provide the basis for a droning, murky bassline that cuts through the arrangement like a lighthouse rays in the dark of night. finally, irish producer eomac, one half of lakker, delivers a version of dominance that centres on lithe broken beats, ghostly melodies and insidious tonal shifts. as its title suggests, dominance shows sanys has become a master of the techno form.

philipp weber is a musician living and working in leipzig, germany. his main focus when creating music is to capture the moment by using all kinds of instruments in a playful and intuitive way, experimenting with rhythms, sounds and melodies. his songs are ideas, emotions and thoughts that he tries to translate into music. »its like speaking a language«, he says, »without knowing its grammar, still trying to find the right words.« philipp is one half of the project webermichelson a two-piece band focused on merg- ing kraut and experimental music through drums, synths and guitars. webermichelson have been a core ingredient of the holger universe from the very start, one of their live shows actually being the moment where it all began. with his first mini album weber now joins the holger family also as a solo artist

detroit-based musician/dj launches cuts against the current zeitgeist of sample dependent music. warm analog drums, thick melodic bass lines, interwoven synth patterns and intricate piano solos create a rich atmosphere for this old school detroit and chic.

for their fourth transmission, happy skull presents a trio of dystopian fantasies from analogue maverick marco bernardi. opener floating is a throbbing trip in to rattling techno territory complete with discordant chords and bubbling acid lines. broken boiler offers a trademark bernardi fusion of sweet, visceral melodies and raw machine drums. rounding things off is upside in , a fearlessly wonky voyage in to freaky techno-funk.

title track don t stop is a loose and playful thing that chucks loopy, circular drums, little vocal riffs, synth stabs and tumbling toms into the mix and lets them all groove along for almost six infectious minutes. its a spritely, silvery and slithering concoction that makes you shake your every limb. stare is a deeper, darker thing with rattling snares rolling over flappy kick drums and wobbling synths ducking in and out of the space left behind. its a tumultuous, drum lead affair that toys with your expectation, threatening to drop or explode but never quite doing so, instead keeping you right on the edge of your seat throughout. the final offering is nian which again has super well defined drums and hits all tumbling and sparking off each other. it s spacious stuff, too, and the indecipherable foreign language vocals add another layer of intrigue to what is already a fascinating cut.

the legendary tony rohr graces phobiq with his presence and offers two tracks alongside his new partner-in-crime layton giordani. the ep starts out with the sparse arrangement of -careless suggestions-, driven by a locomotive bassline and grinding rhythm section. moody stabs reinforce the bleak vibe, and the vocals coming at us from otherworldly black holes only add to the mood. label boss sasha carassi steps up for the remix in his trademarked stomping style, making use of hypnotic elements and the busy claps from the original. industrial-sounding hi-hat action drives his interpretation all the way home, after an apocalyptic breakdown, of course. on -reggae shiz- things are more stripped-down with bare drums holding everything together, as the rest of the arsenal slowly builds around menacing chords and a rocksteady groove. behind the spotlight, liquid bass comes together with quirky percussion to complete this almost-10-minute-long opus. dema maintains a sublime, shadowy mood in his version but opts for busier hats and heavier usage of chords.

corbu are an electronic, indie-rock band from brooklyn, new york spearheaded by producer and multi-instrumentalist jonathan graves. corbu are jonathan, todd hoellerman (drums, keys), amanda scott (synths, percussion), julian ferraldo (guitar, keys) and brian murphy (bass, keys). named after french architect le corbusier, the band has a strong creative aesthetic. graves writes the music from visual ideas, which he translates into sound. corbu songs are often heard partially or entirely in dreams, and are influenced by films, physical spaces and a childhood love of nature and science fiction. and it works. corbus music is beautifully crafted, taking the listener on a journey from day to night, through exhilarating sunsoaked sonic landscapes to land softly on the surface of the moon. jonathan began singing and playing different instruments at age nine, and eventually fell in love with samplers and their ability to bend conventional sounds into something abstract and new.

bushwick17 is a project by costanza francavilla and alex infascelli. it is a 17 minutes improvisation session, recorded in bushwick on a summer afternoon - with no additional edits, mixing or efx. the idea is based on both artists s obsession with the number 17: the concept was to freely capture 17 minutes of their day together, without any thought before the act or any extra sound manipulation after the act. costanza placed 2 mics on the floor in the middle of the room - facing the wall - and played synthesizers while merging herself with dreamlike vocals into ambient floating textures. alex turned on a fan that was abandoned in the studio, placed the electric guitar in front of it, creating ethereal drones, and moving from guitars atmospheres to abruptly exploding yet sultry drums patterns. the result is an hypnotic sonic journey into an indefinite condition of space and time.

since his debut in 2009, loops haunt has continued to confound and excite with an output as mercurial as it is rare. toying with jungle and hip hop on zenith and outright sound design on ark, the wilderness-bound beat alchemist uses his isolation to explore and even create his otherworldly sound palate. lurking behind immaculate drums are the windswept sounds of the desolate north and mechanized textures plucked from his father s own workshop. here we embark on loops most complete work to date. exits is designed to be listened to as one continuous track, opening with ambient mood and emotion, layering outboard synths and found-sounds on the title track and trap door. an unexpected calm beginning is shattered in the second act with the pounding rhythms and industrial heart beats of howl and iiva. exits is an insight into a uniquely unpredictable talent and rare chance to be immersed in his sound.

the west coast cosmic vibe of kingcats -down in california- was one of the highlights of 2012s magik cyrkles compilation with an edit cut by albion. now the track has been reworked by album compilers psychemagik who kicks up the drums and extend the parts purely for the dancefloor.
